What I use
During the first few weeks of being completely natural, my hair behaved differently compared to when it was relaxed. I was conditioned to wash my hair with a sulfate shampoo. So jumping from sulfate shampoo to Co-washing was an extremely difficult transition. However, believe me, as naturals this is the best thing to do for our curly hair.
My current favorite Cowashes are the As I Am Coconut CoWash and the Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Nourishing and Conditioning Cleansing Conditioner. For my hair not to get used to one product I alternate between the two.
Why Co-Wash
Our hair is prone to being dry because it is curly. Our scalp naturally produces natural oils that coat the hair shaft in order to strengthen it. This amazing oil that is produced from our oil glands is called sebum. Sebum can travel easily down a hair shaft that is straight. However, it has a difficult time traveling down a hair shaft that is curly. For this reason, whenever washing your hair it is extremely important to pay attention to your hair moisture balance. If your hair feels extremely dry do not proceed in stripping your hair more by washing with a sulfate shampoo.

Too much of anything can be a bad thing. I experienced this firsthand. I remember I CoWashed nonstop for about four months. I experienced shedding (not too much but enough for me to notice). I realized that my pores were clogged causing the excess shedding. I decided to wash my hair with a sulfate-free shampoo. I quickly noticed a difference.
When is a good time to not CoWash
Everyone’s hair is different. Listen to your hair. Trust me she will make you listen to her one way or another. My favorite sulfate-free shampoos are the Carol’s Daughter Almond Milk Shampoo and Carol’s Daughter Coco Creme Shampoo. Both cleansed my scalp without stripping my hair of moisture.
